Fave Science Fiction: MOVIES

NUMBER TWO:

Cloverfield (2008)

Genre:Found Footage; Monster

Directed by Matt Reeves

Written by Drew Goddard (bow down peasants)

Man some people hate this movie. It's a hard one to bring up in conversation sometimes because they just rail on it! It's funny how they will talk to you as if it is a common practice for the entire world to hate on this movie. Actually, a lot of the movies I love get this treatment.

Why is this?

I personally think this movie is beyond brilliant. It's a great piece of storytelling in a filmmaking style that is notoriously hard to get points across in. I guess that is a big part of why people don't like it- the shaky cam- but I say if you can't handle the shaky cam avoid shaky cam movies... am I right or am I correct?

SO enough ragging on others (something I do too often) and let's talk about the movie itself.

It's a monster movie- something we on the western hemisphere don't tackle often these days but it delivers. It's a SCARY notion, a random monstrous ugly beast just effing up New York for no reason really. But what reason could a large beastie really have? He's not that smart or he would take better care where his tail (tails?) are going.

The movie weaves a very personal love story through the monster mania- it's expertly done- it humanizes the movie.

Fanboy fave Lizzy Caplan does a great turn as the cool girl all the hispter dudes want- even when she is covered in dust from city rubble and blood from her own face.

You know I love a movie when I start to wish it was a TV show so there could be more episodes to watch, so the story can continue, it has a GIVE ME MORE quality to it.

Aside from all of that this is one of the best marketed films to date. J.J Abrams has always been great at marketing his stuff- making the audience have that "have to watch what happens next" without even seeing the actual product.  Did anyone else go to the website for the movie and cursed the name of Abrams when all it was was photos from the party in the trailer? So frustrating but brilliant.

The end credits feature a score from Michael Giacchino that is right out of a classic monster movie you'd hear in the 1940s, it doesn't really go with the film but it is completely wonderful.

Oh Clover you silly ugly beast. Why did you have to show up randomly and rip off the Statue of Liberty's head? We take that personally around here buddy!

So what is next for the Field of Clover?

A trailer for Cloverfield 2 was released in 2011 but NOTHING else happened afterward... what is up JJ? What's that? Filming and post production for Star Trek 2??? NO EXCUSE! Just kidding finish that up and then we'll talk big monsters... or BIG GLOWING ORBS IN THE SKY!!?!? (watch the trailer below)

Hey Steve

The summer of 2011 I attended the "Super 8" premiere and premiere party in Los Angeles.

Now by attended I mean I was one of the lucky peasants standing along the red carpet to be asked if they wanted to fill seats.

Um yes.

We were able to attend the party afterward because we snuck in by followed Elle Fanning's entourage. I could probably pass for a Fanning... a cousin or something...

But we are not here to discuss the party. No. Perhaps another time.

My lovely roommates and I. (Shout out to Lauren and Jenny!!) Decided we HAD TO PEE before the movie so we braved the impossibly busy foyer full of industry types; celebrity and not.

We made it safely to the restroom. After attacking Conan O'Brien and consequently being growled at him as he shook our hands.

I also had to dodge Michael Bay so I didn't get infected by his non creativity and lust for explosions.

We also stood in line behind a very grumpy looking Jenna Elfman. She wasn't so Dharma as she was Greg in that moment.

We left the restroom and prepared to wade back into the sea of Hollywood.

And that is when I saw him.

Steven Spielberg.

What does one do when suddenly faced with one of the people who was instrumental in making her the person she is today? What does she say? Does she say anything?

SHE HAS TO SAY SOMETHING!

We made our way over to him and I was THIS CLOSE to him!

It was so loud in there.

I said- " Hey Steve."

Not loud enough. He was swept away quickly without a glance toward me.

The next day when I told my Dad what I had done he freaked out.

"YOU CALLED HIM STEVE!?!? You can't call Steven Spielberg STEVE!!"

It is his name Father.

And with that we have finally arrived. To why I have called you all here today.  To discuss one of the best directors of all time and space.

And by discuss I mean I will list every sci-fi movie he has directed and that I have experienced and share a few thoughts.

It's gonna be fun.

A rousing "Thanks Steve!" from the whole world for giving them their phobia of the water. If I had a penny for every person who swore off the beach after watching this movie I would be almost as rich as you Steve.

A personal thanks to Steve for more alien fears. I've always thought it was kind of a strange movie. But very important to the genre.

I remember watching this for the first time on my mom's tiny black and white grainy kitchen TV. Probably the worst way to first watch such a grande movie but the ending still haunted me for days- the melting skin. *shiver*

Aliens are cute! Look at him! He's so nice and friendly... and still haunts my dreams.

Most annoying love interested and side kick award.

One of the coolest scenes in film history is when Indie drops his father's journal and it is picked up by DUHN DUHN DUHN Hitler himself! And you are all "WELL FRICKING EFFF AFTER ALL THAT!" But then silly fame hungry Adolph AUTOGRAPHS the book he has been searching for. Awesome.

One of my childhood favorites. It's a mythology rich story- and though it may not be correct in some of it's lore (as I have been pointed out many times from all of you Peter Pan nerds) it is still a wonderful journey filled with great performances by the cast. The best of course being Dustin Hoffman as the Captain Hook to end all Hooks.

Legit dinosaurs... like SO LEGIT! They still blow my mind how great they look. It's a dream come true for ANYONE, well a nightmare come true but still.

Still looking good guys. This is a great movie but it doesn't have the haunted house quality the first one did making it lose some of the horror.
A sprawling epic journey. I think this movie is so utterly beautiful visually and emotionally. Some story issues but beautiful none the less.
One of my all time favorite movies ever. I love a movie that treats your brain like a quilt being stitched together.

Great movie. I know a lot of people don't like it.  I loved the everyman story approach and the destruction felt real- it felt like a genuine story in an unbelievable situation which makes it even scarier.
Something went wrong here. Not sure if Steve and Harrison were just over it but it was a reunion that went a little weird and awkward. Also I feel bad for that snake they used to get out of that sinking sand...poor guy didn't even ask for that movie. Neither did we buddy.

Well that was fun! I'm probably going to watch all of those again now. My Spielberg apatite has been awakened!!!!!!!

That sounds kind of gross.

Bad Robot indeed

What do strange red balls, strong female protagonists, eighties computer screens, abducted pregnant women, lens flares and the number 47 have in common?

A mister Jeffrey Jacob Abrams!

Scifi film and television EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Writing and directing some of our best media today.

I actually went to the "Super 8" premiere in Hollywood last summer and I was SO CLOSE to talking to him but he was always surrounded by people, you know, because it was his movie.

If given the chance again I would shake his hand and say the following-

"I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart and of my father's heart for your remake of Star Trek and keeping the spirit of the original series as well as making it even better... also I need a job."

I took a Hitchcock class in college and out of any of the creative juggernauts we have today I think J.J. is the closest to Alfred. Not because he makes the same type of movies as Alfred, because he doesn't.

It's because of the recurring tropes, his re-use of themes the same way ol' Hitch did.

Let's talk about some tropes-

Strange red balls:

The Mueller Device in "Alias" was the cause of SO MUCH FUSS! Just when you thought Sloane was over it, he wasn't. Everyone payed the price for his obsession including him and according to the show- he is still paying for it.

Red Matter in "Star Trek", which also caused a lot of fuss when it created a black hole that probably should have swallowed our dear Enterprise but of course with human spirit (and some alien spirit I guess) and a smirk from Kirk, they made it through okay.

Strong Female Protagonists:

Agent Sydney Bristow: She has all the same problems we do. Hates her boss, Boy problems, Strained relationship with a parent, Fiance killed by the evil agency she secretly works for...

ONE OF THE BEST CHARACTERS EVER TO GRACE OUR TV SCREENS AND SHOULD BE IMMORTALIZED BY A GOLDEN STATUE IN EVERY MAJOR CITY... Dr. Juliet Burke

"AGENT OLIVIA DUNHAM, FBI!"

And now Charlie Mathieson, in brand new "Revolution" who is very Katniss Everdeen- like but more personable and brings a wonderment to a character who could easily be hardened by her situation- I am super excited to see how she grows!

Eighties Computer Screens:

Abducted Pregnant Women:

Sydney
Olivia
Claire
Kind of Winona Kirk (Kirk's mommy)- she didn't exactly get on that escape pod of her own will.

... and I'm forgetting like twelve more and I'm sure twelve more will come.

Lens Flares:

If anyone knows anything about J.J. it's that he LOVES A GOOD LENS FLARE! Make sure to wear sunglasses to the next Star Trek.

The number 47:

Who needs the answer to the universe when you can just count up five more?

It's everywhere in his work. Just watch something he's done and you'll see it show up somewhere.

Oh and here is something random from "Cloverfield" just so you know I love it-

Oh J.J... good times brutha-

If you can think of any J.J. tropes I've missed you should add them below.

PS: I never really watched "Alcatraz" or "Person of Interest" or "Felicity" that is why they are not included in this post.

A fangirl's first love

Once upon a time there was young girl. Maybe fifteen years in age who turned on her TV late one night and was faced with the image of the most beautiful man she has ever seen and perhaps ever will see.

This man was Fox Mulder.

The most beautiful face in the world.

Well... David Duchovny but let's be real- I was in love with Mulder and David has proven to be a creepo extreme (though still soooo handsome)

I was torn for two seconds because this was a show my mother forbid us to watch when we were little just because it was too scary. I was FIFTEEN! I could decide what I wanted to watch!

So watch The X-Files I did.

My first true obsession, long before The Doctor and not so long before Buffy.

I started watching The X-Files religiously a few months after the show ended. I remember my favorite part of the week was searching my DVR to find when the next rerun episode will record.

On the weekends it was never on.

I was always depressed on the weekends.

Shortly after I would force my friends to come over after school and watch it with me. I think I watched the entire series three times in a two year period.

I should watch it again soon.

When I think of all the shows since I've been obsessed with it never felt the same as when I was in the throws of passion with The X-files. Even Doctor Who which is the love of my life.

I think it was first love- I may not have had that with an actual person yet but I'm pretty sure what I felt was real with The X-Files.

There are so many things from that show that have inspired me to be not only the writer I am today but just the person I am today.

I miss watching all the episodes for the first time- the hunger and the excitement.

To be honest the hunger was initially because I just wanted Mulder and Scully to KISS ALREADY but soon it became about their journey together and even more so Mulder's journey and finding his destiny while Scully kept him grounded and a good man.

I love love the first movie "Fight the Future" it perfectly complimented to the series and moved the mythology along in a big way.

Can't say the same about "Want to Believe".

Here we were expecting a movie to answer questions and maybe even give us hope for more--- instead we were given an extra long filler episode that would actually be one of my least favorite episodes.

Why Chris Carter why?

The only information of any weight we got was THEY ARE LIVING TOGETHER! Which is something we all were assuming anyway.

I'm now assuming (despite some recent reports)  that is end to my favorite otp/ supernatural investigating FBI agents ever (sorry Olivia Dunham)

But you never know there might be more.

At least that's what I want to believe.

TOP FIVE FAVE X-FILES EPS:

Syzyngy- "Hate him wouldn't want to date him."

Arcadia- "Wanna make that honeymoon video now?"

Jose Chung's From Outerspace- "What the bleep!?"

Bad Blood- "Come on, Scully, get those little legs moving, come on."

Triangle- "Hey Scully, I love you."

P.S. Yes I noticed all my favorites are the humorous episodes. I LIKE TO LAUGH OKAY.

Vomit

When I turned two years old my uncle gave me a cassette tape for my birthday.

It was one of those prerecorded songs that used to be popular I guess- they would record it with a bunch of different names so you just buy the tape that says CHRISTINA and wham! Instant personalized birthday gift.

So the one my uncle got me was one about a space traveling alien who knew it was my birthday and was going all over the universe to find me the perfect present.

He sang as he visited all of his extra-terrestrial friends who it turned out were all useless in finding me a freaking present- so he just decided to sing me a song... about not finding me a gift... this guy was a just not a good friend.

"HEY CHRISTINA! IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY! TODAY!"

I'm sure I was expected to be delighted by this spaceman and his endeavors but when I heard the song, I immediately started crying.

I was legitimately afraid of this spaceman and WHO WOULDN'T BE!?!?!

In part of the song he goes to one of his alien friends who has the voice of SATAN and asks if he has a present and he is all "UM NO I HATE CHRISTINA AND I WILL EAT HER BONES!!!!"

He definitely didn't say that but he might has well have.

Then this spaceman fool tells me that he will be OUTSIDE OF MY WINDOW tonight saying Happy Birthday- HOW ABOUT NO!

I found the tape again when I was in high school and listened and I still felt the fear from when I was little- my poor uncle didn't mean to scar me for life but that tape was the beginning of my fear, my biggest fear- ALIENS.

I remember a few years later, I was perhaps five. My parents were watching a special report on Alien Abduction.

After that I never left my room after bedtime. Even if I had to pee there was no way I was going to be beamed up by those little green jerk faces while I was on the loo.

We went on a family vacation when I was six to Universal Studios, back then the ET ride was still there. While on the ride you were on the bike and flying around different scenes from the movie. At the end before ET went home (good riddance I say) he looked right at me, pointed his lighted up finger and said " CHRIIISTIIIINAAAA"

And I flipped a lid.

My parents are still apologizing for that. Apparently you could give a name to the operators for ET to say. They did not inform me of their mischief, thought it would be a surprise. More like a living nightmare.

It's ironic that most of my favorite media features aliens heavily- but I'm not afraid of the silly Doctor Who alien of the week creatures- I'm talking about the mysterious type of aliens. The ones who you don't see much of, who take you away, who implant crap in your nasal cavity.

"Signs" is still the scariest movie I have ever seen. It's also one of my favorite movies (settle down I still loathe M. Night for what he did to Airbender but still he made one of my favorite movies- THAT IS JUST LIFE!)

Anything alien can usually set me off- my usual reaction is VOMIT. If I looked out my window right now and I saw a UFO land in my front yard I'm pretty confident I would actually vomit before just.... you know... dying.

Have you seen " The Fourth Kind"?

It's pretty horrible, just a badly made film when it comes to story and characters who we can relate to and care about, BUT those aliens in that piece of crap is the EXACT type I vomit over. I didn't sleep for two weeks after seeing it- I just lay there in the dark with my eyes closed completely convinced that ALIENS WERE EVERYWHERE AROUND ME.

It's irrational and it's ridiculous but I can't turn my brain off or make it be mature- it just wont. It's like my brain is a masochist but so am I.

I watch Sherlock and Doctor Who.

My New to Who Tale and other Timey Wimey musings

I blame my old housemate Bre for this change in my life. Actually it’s a whole new life- my life before the Doctor was NOTHING!
We were house mates in college and she kept being all DOCTOR WHO THIS AND DOCTOR WHO THAT BLAH  BLAH BLAH.
Before one winter break she handed me her flash drive which had Ninth Doctor season and said JUST WATCH!
So reluctantly I did.
And reluctantly I kept watching.
And suddenly I was addicted.
When Chris left I was DEPRESSED to say the least, but I had to have MORE!
So I went on youtube and luckily they had New Earth ( I had no idea about Christmas Specials so I watched Christmas Invasion later). I started watching again reluctanly because I was like WHO IS THIS SKINNY KID AND WHAT MAKES HIM THINK HE CAN BE THE DOCTOR!?!?!?
Five minutes in.
JK I LOVE YOU DAVID!
Anyway… it’s Bre’s fault so no matter how much she pisses me off sometimes I can never hate her because she gave me The Doctor.
So thanks Bre.
I think the best example of someone discovering Doctor Who is in Community when Abed watches the first few seconds of Inspector Spacetime and he says

Doctor Who is more than just a TV show that I love. It is something that I crave- I have withdrawals if I don't have some type of Doctor related stimulus in front of me every 12 hours or so.
Sometimes when my friends ask me what the show is actually about I have nothing to say because if they aren't going to take the time to find out for themselves then I'm not going to bore them with what will turn into a two hour explanation that they will just forget most of. It really is a personal experience because The Doctor means something different to all of us.
Some Whovian's mourn the writing of Davies and some thank the Time Lords that Moffat has taken over.  Personally I love both of these men.
Thank you Russel T. Davies for bringing me The Doctor and making me fall in love with him.
And thank you Steven Moffat for keeping him alive in ways that are unexpected and brilliant.
NOW I am not saying either of these men don't have flaws in their writing but I can be grateful to them even with my or your issues with how they run the show.
I love this show so much that it could revert to cardboard Daleks and a soundstage and I would still be loyal to it.
Watching Doctor Who is not like just watching any other show- it deserves attention and it deserves devotion. It deserves hours of your life gone from fan fiction reading/writing, fan art making and Tumblr scrolling. It deserves your tears and your laughter.
It DEFINITELY deserves more than just a sound bite at the London Olympics- I mean how many flipping times does he have to save you fools to get some recognition? C'MON!
There is no way to really describe how this show has changed my life, it's not like I was depressed before hand- I just had this ubknown HOLE IN MY HEARTS... two hearts... count them.

YOU WANT TO MATE!?!?

Let's talk about companions.

More specifically companions of the Doctor.

Even more specifically my favorite companion.

Donna THEBESTEVER Noble.

I have to admit the first time we met Miss Noble, I was hesitant, we had just gone through a life changing event. ROSE WAS GONE! WE JUST LEFT HER THERE ON THE BEACH! WE DIDN'T EVEN FINISH OUR SENTENCE!

Well I finished it.

Doctor: And I suppose if it's the last chance for me to say it, Rose Tyler...
Me: I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we are back on the TARDIS basically with our hearts ripped open and bleeding rose red all over the console when there she was.

WHAT?

Donna SHEROCKSSOCKS Noble. (almost looks like Sherlockssocks)

The original ginger in a wedding dress. (Sorry Amy)

WHAT?

He says WHAT? a few more times.

Here is the deal with Donna. She is loud. She is mean but she is also perhaps the kindest companion thus far. She stands up to the Doctor about his frequent BS and like he says about her many times.

SHE SAVED HIM.

I didn't know I missed Donna until we saw her again in "Partners in Crime". After a hectic and depressing season with Martha (none of that her fault; that is another post) it was kind of a sigh of relief moment when the Doctor saw her through that window.

David and Catherine have a very special kind of chemistry, one that goes beyond romantic.

I've heard people say Donna is like the Doctor's sister but they get confused as a couple so much that feels weird. I would say they are the perfect example of best friends.

Donna is my favorite because I think I would be most like Donna, I relate to her the most, her demeanor, her sense of humor, her insecurities, not so much for her love of black men.... I do prefer the skinny pasty british man... the kind that will give paper cuts when you hug them.

It's a more bitter than sweet ending for us with Donna. Also for The Doctor to have to leave her behind- I'm sure he thought he had found his new Rose but without all those pesky romantic feelings.

Donna SHEISBETTERTHANYOU Noble.

"No stupid martian is going to stop me from getting married. To hell with you!"

Fave Science Fiction: MOVIES

I've decided to do a series of posts that will be spread out about my favorite Scifi Movies not in any particular order.

Now these are stand alone movies that are not apart of any series. Just simply scifi. I'm also going to watch all of them again- just a refresher on them and it will also be super fun times so here I go-

NUMBER ONE!!!

The Host (2006)

Genre: Monster

Directed by Joon-ho Bong

Written by Joon-ho Bong
                 Won-jun Ha
                 Chul-hyun Baek

Available on Netflix.

Holy crap. There are few movies of ANY genre that are as brilliant as this South Korean perfection. Everything is so well orchestrated in this movie it puts all other monster movies to shame.

This is one of those movies I watch and I am so jealous that I didn't create it, but the director Joon- ho Bong crafts such a heartaching family story about the coolest family around, The Park family. What I love is that these people are SO FLAWED! They really are a mess but when one of their own is in trouble they are a force not to be messed with.

I also love (and hate) how this movie is not afraid of death. These people have been thrust into a dangerous situation not only because of the giant muated fish monster walking around but also from their own government, but isn't it always the way?

Also Americans are evil. Especially clean freak and cross eyes ones.

On top of all of that, it is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. IT'S JUST WAY TOO GOOD! If you haven't seen it you haven't see anything.

P.S. Watch it with subtitles- the english dub is not good.

The Coolest Cousin Ever

So I know about this little book series you guys might not have heard about before. It's really obscure, kind of low key. I think they might have made movies but I'm not sure really. It's written by this British guy named J.K. or something.

It's called Harry Potter.

I've read the series all the way through twice so far. This is only because I RARELY do that. I just don't read books again- though I should.

I had so much fun my second round of Potter that I am actually resisting on starting again. I was usually reading on the bus ride to work or during my work breaks. Or between classes. I enjoyed every minute of it.

If I was having a bad day at work it was all better when I got on my lunch break and could leave those idiot fools in real life and go to Hogwarts for 45 minutes. It helps a lot to always have a bright spot in a bad day.

I will ALWAYS reel in disbelief when people say they have never read the books. They have no idea what their lives are missing- the friends they could have in Harry, Hermione and Ron.

If you have told me you have never read these books and I still speak to you then there must be something else about you I feel like I need to keep around but I will NEVER FORGET you are the loser who didn't enrich your life with HP- so stop reminding me when it comes up. Thanks.

My favorite book in the series is Order of Pheonix. I've found it usually an unpopular one to be a favorite. So you may ask yourself: Why in Godric's Hollow would that be your favorite HP book Stina?

Well I'll tell you stranger or the few Facebook friends or Tumblr people I tricked here by a clever link line-

When I first was reading Order I was just as angsty and and angry as Harry- MAYBE with not as good reasons as he had BUT STILL, being a teenager is tough.

So when he was all shaggy hair and yelling at everyone all the time I have to say it was the only time in  the books (Important note: I DO NOT picture Daniel Radcliffe when I read the books) where I found Harry attractive.

It's interesting because I never was IN LOVE with anyone in these books when I was first reading. Now that I'm older my heart beats for Remus Lupin hard core.

But in Order Harry was my boyfriend for the week it took me to read it (I'm a relatively slow reader). In fact when I finished I was so forlorn my Dad said, "Oh Christina broke up with Harry." Even he could see I was in emotional turmoil.

Oh angry Harry. I'm totally into you.

But then I was over it because Hero Harry started to kick in in Half Blood Prince and I was back to looking at Harry as... maybe a cool cousin? The coolest cousin I've ever had.

A Whedonite post

As a Whedonite you are required to posses the following:

Witty sarcastic sense of humor.

A love for strong female characters.

Always be prepared for your favorite character to die.

These requirements can be daunting to some. Say the general public. BUT THEN for three glorious weeks. THREE WEEKS! The whole WORLD turned Whedonite.

Everyone was enjoying Tony Stark's impossible sarcasm and wit.

Everyone was appreciating the force of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and tough Cobie Smulders as agent Maria Hill.

And everyone was cursing Joss's name for killing off the precious Agent Coulson before his time!

Three weeks where the whole world felt what we long term Whedonites have felt for years. But like most fads of the world this one has faded a bit and now we all sit alone again crying AGAIN about how cruel it was to lose Fred so fast and unexpectedly to Illyria on Angel.

So rude Joss. She was my favorite.

I will never sing "You are my Sunshine" ever again.

I've also noticed Joss pops up in the other things that I love- stuff from my childhood.

Toy Story. Titan A.E. Atlantis: Lost Empire.

He's also one of the best songwriters EVER.

But only if you like songs that speak volumes about character and are funny yet evoke emotion. If you don't like those things you are probably a robot so you should check into that.

If you like those things then maybe you should watch "Once More with Feeling" again OR "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" or for bonus points listen to your "Commentary!" album.

We have a true visionary in this man. He is finally getting his big due but he has been loved violently for years by many. I can't wait to see "Much Ado About Nothing" and I will forever be re-watching Buffy, Angel and Firefly my whole life.

My kids are going to be raised by those shows! Thanks Joss for raising my future children for me- I really can't think of a better way to grow up.

I'd love to know which character death in the Whedonverse has affected you the most? How did you deal with such a loss?

Just a few thoughts on the Star Trek

A few years ago I went to the Star Trek exhibition in Pheonix. I went mostly because we were there visiting my uncles and I knew it was something my father and his brothers could do. They don't spend lot of time together and I actually think they have become more aquaintences than siblings over the years.

But Star Trek was something they grew up with. Something they shared a love for in their early years, something even my youngest uncle who is over ten years younger than my dad can share with his big brothers and bring them together.

I, of course, being the over observant daughter and niece I am found out about this exhibition and suggested that we all go. Some of my younger female cousins stuck their noses up at it, including my sister.

They went to see the Hannha Montanna movie so I got the better end of the deal. (Though I will admit I didn't HATE the Hannah Montana movie- I watched it with my roommate Bre on one of our particularly weirder nights)

It was at this exhibition when I realized how much knowledge I have gathered over the years about Star Trek. This is stuff that is like sensory triggered or something because I couldn't show you just how obscure my knowledge goes right now but if you put me in the costume hall again I could tell you who wore what in what episode and why that stitching pattern had significance to the character's growth at the time. (Okay over exaggerating a TINGE but you get the idea)

After that trip I decided I was officially a Trekkie. I accepted it with all the vigor and attention this self proclamation deserves. I had also willingly added myself to a group of people who are frequently mocked and looked down upon by other fandoms.

But I would totally rather go to Starfleet Academy then the Jedi Academy. So LIVE LONG AND PROSPER JERKS!

QUICK RUN DOWN OF MY TREKKIE STYLE:

Favorite Series: Voyager

Favorite Character: Tom Paris (The most glorious of douche bags)

Favorite Captain: James Tiberius Kirk

Favorite Villain: Q (Always hilarious)

Favorite Movie: Voyage Home (THE ONE WITH THE WHALES!!)

Favorite Couple: Riker and detaching the saucer from the rest of the ship. (HE LOVES IT SO MUCH!)

First things first: A Fathers Day post

Welcome to my blog! My name is Christina. My friends call me Stina. I am a graduate of film from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco where I spent four and half wonderful years grooming my creativity and learning SO MANY LIFE LESSONS!

One of those was realizing that I love science fiction more than any other genre. I love talking about it, I love reading it, watching it, crying about it, obsessing about it, losing sleep over it, and most of all writing about it.

Every person has a start. A beginning to their passion. Mine started with my old man- fitting isn't it? This will also be a father's day post... why not?

Every weekday when I was growing up the Simpsons came on at six. To get to the hilarious glory that was Bart and Homer I had to sit and watch Star Trek: Next Generation with my Dad at five.

I was never against watching Next Gen I just didn't really know WHAT I was watching, but that hour of  the crew of the Enterprise working out  whatever problem they came across was the most important hour of my young life.

It was the beginning. The beginning of my love for the science fiction genre. The beginning of my love for scripted television. The beginning of my love of character and story arcs. The beginning of shaping who I am today.

I am a proud inherited Trekkie. That might sound like I didn't have a choice in the matter but I did. My sister never took to the Enterprise crew as I did, oh sure she thinks Chris Pine and Zach Quinto are "hot" in the new movies but I love the Trek because I simply LOVE the Trek!

My father lives and breathes Original Series. I think the influence of Captain James T. Kirk on my young ginger father back in the day instilled a need to seek justice and like Kirk be the hero to implement it.

My father is a high ranking official in my home county's District Attorney's office- after 30 years of enacting Kirk like justice he has reached the mountain top in his career path. I truly believe Kirk was a huge factor in this though I doubt my dad made it to second base with any green alien ladies.

Dad also instilled my love of all things Disney. This I don't think I really had choice in.

Was I the one asking him to watch The Little Mermaid with me on Saturday afternoons? No.

Did I ever have to beg him to watch Winnie The Pooh when it was blistery Windsday? Nope.

All my love and devotion for Disney stems from his love for it and his even deeper devotion to me and making sure I had something to share with him as I grew older because he always knew someday I would be like Ariel and dream of more for my life- and he would have to let me go.

So thanks Pops for the brainwashing! You can't judge me for being a starving writer my whole life because it's your fault I'm the way I am.

I love you Daddy.

This blog will be about my wibbly wobbly timey wimey sciency- fictiony life- I'm a Sci-Fi Princess and welcome to my kingdom!
